Why you'd want to live in Cleveland
Cleveland is a charming small town in the northeastern mountains of Georgia, nestled in beautiful White County. It serves as the county seat and is situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, making it a picturesque and scenic area known for its natural beauty. Approximately 80 miles north of Atlanta, Cleveland is strategically positioned along U.S. Highway 129 and Georgia Highway 115. The city is surrounded by beautiful landscapes, including Yonah Mountain and the Chattahoochee National Forest. The original settlement where Cleveland is located was known as Mt. Yonah, a small community named for one of the most distinct mountains in Southern Appalachia that is visible throughout the current city. The mountain continues to offer some of the most breathtaking views of northeast Georgia from the south to the northwest all along it's lengthy bare rock face. When White County was created legislatively in 1857, the community was centered near the crossroads where the current City Hall stands today. The settlement became a major stopping area for those traveling from Clarkesville to Dahlonega. Representative William B. Shelton, who represented Cleveland in the Georgia General Assembly, proposed changing the town’s name in honor of Benjamin Cleveland, a General in the militia of Habersham County. Legislatively, the name changed to Cleveland in 1870. The town’s center features historical buildings, charming shops, and local restaurants, creating a cozy downtown atmosphere. The community is a quiet and close-knit community with a unique mix of residential, agricultural, and tourism-related businesses. With a full-time population of 3,500 to 4,000 residents (as of recent estimates). The town is roughly one square mile, but recent growth has led to properties along the commercial corridors to becoming part of the city as well. Abundant outdoor activities like hiking, camping and fishing abound throughout the area.
